DirectGov website has information about available formats of books and newspapers and how to get hold of them and also information about how to make television viewing more enjoyable. To increase access to television for all people, alternative formats are bring developed. These include subtitles, audio description and sign language. The government has set targets for television broadcasters to improve their accessibility so things should improve further in the coming years. You may already be aware of subtitles which can be selected when required for a wide variety of television programmes, DVDs and videos. Legislation requires that 90 per cent of ITV and Channel 4 programmes must be subtitled by the end of 2010 and the BBC is already committed to offering subtitles for all their programmes. The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) has a factsheet on their website called 'How to get subtitles'. It explains how to use subtitles with different types of television and with DVDs.
